When it comes to summer I tend to switch up my products to suit the season. It’s no longer about high coverage foundations or jumpers, it’s all about the minimal makeup and sunscreen. I’ve recently done a complete overhaul on all of my beauty products and picked out the top products I cannot live without during summer. Then compiled them into one big blog post so you can get an idea of what I’m loving. So who’s ready to dive right into my summer essentials? It’s a long list, so I suggest you grab yourself a cuppa (or a wine!) and have yourself a good read.
Let’s talk about the obvious first. You know what’s not a cool look? S U N B U R N. It hurts, burns and it gets itchy and flaky. Not to mention its super dangerous and can have damaging effects to the skin. So the best thing to do is to protect your skin at all costs, after all it is the largest organ of the body. So to help protect my skin I’ve been using the Piz Buin 1 Day Long Lotion SPF 30*. I feel I’m quite lucky in the sense that I don’t tend the burn that easily so SPF 30 is perfect for me (which is weird considering I’m fair skinned and come from a family of redheads!)
When trying to find sun protection always make sure you have the right SPF suitable for you. With my children I always use SPF 50 and I like to make sure it has a UVA rating of 5 stars. This way I know they are 100% protected. A couple of years ago I never knew anything about UVA ratings, I used to just pick up the cheapest one off the shelves. But now I always take a look at the back of a bottle to double check the ratings now.
After a day in the sun I finish it off with a bit of Piz Buin Soothing and Cooling Moisturising Aftersun Lotion*. I really do panic about premature aging of the skin and dehydration so I use this to bring my moisture levels back up. Also if I caught a little bit of a tan during the day this helps to prolong it. Plus it feels lovely on the skin, has an instant cooling effect.
Along with your skin, your lips need taken care of as well. Weirdly enough these can get sunburnt and dehydrated as well and tend to look like little prunes on your face (or is that just me?). So to help protect them I’ve been using the Palmers Cocoa Butter Ultra Moisturising Original Lip Balm SPF 15*. It smells amazing and doesn’t leave a sticky texture behind on the lips. It helps protect them against sun damage and leaves them feeling moisturised and hydrated. A winner in my opinion and has been a staple in my handbag whenever I’m out and about.
Another lip product that I’ve been using a fair bit during the summer is the Zoella Beauty So Soft Lip Oil. Same with the Palmers Lip Balm it leaves my lips feeling moisturised and hydrated. Plus it tastes absolutely amazing. Sometimes I’ll put this on top of the lip balm, just to give me that glossy lip look on super hot days. More about this lip oil here.
I’ve always got a bottle (or 5) of dry shampoo floating about my house and the brand of choice is always Batiste. Its cheap and cheerful and always does the job. I try to only wash my hair 2/3 times a week so those days in between definitely need a spritz of dry shampoo. Especially during the summer months where my hair tends to get more greasy due to the humidity and quite possibly sweat from my forehead. I normally just flip my head forward, spray all over, flip back and massage my head for a good 1/2 minutes then throw it in a bobble. Just like that my hair looks presentable and doesn’t look like I haven’t washed it in 2 days.
I like to do a hair mask at least once a week as well due to how dry my hair can get. With dry shampoo product, hairspray and heat damage it can look a bit ‘frazzled’. So I’ve been mainly using the Alberto Balsam Damage Repair Mask twice a week in the shower and I’m loving the results. I tend to pop it in after shampooing and leave it in my hair for about 5 minutes before washing out. It leaves my hair silky smooth and brings it back to life. Plus it smells like coconuts and I live for a coconut scented product!
During the summer months as well I tend to wear my hair up in a bobble more than normal. This is purely because I hate getting my hair in my face. Especially when its super hot and I’m sweating excessively. So bobbles and kirby grips are a huge essential during this time.
There has been 3 skin care saviors this summer. Firstly I’ve been using the T-Zone Blackhead Fighting Facial Scrub* religiously. This has been helping me clear out my skin from all the dirt and sweat which has accumulated throughout the day. Secondly the Mario Badescu Acne Facial Cleanser, the holy grail out of my skin care products. I suffer really bad with hormonal acne and basically tried everything recommended to me. Until I discovered this. Within a week my spots cleared up and I make sure I use this everyday now to keep them at bay. I still get the odd spot (we all do) but not near as much as I used to.
Because the acne facial cleanser can dry out my skin a little bit a good moisturiser is a must. The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA has been the moisturiser of choice. This had to get a little mention in my summer essentials as its such a lovely moisturiser and at such a lovely price (gotta love a cheap decent moisturiser!)! It leaves my skin feeling soft and ready to protect my face from anything thats thrown at it. It melts into the skin quickly and has a slight cooling effect (I love that in hot weather).
To me, summer is all about the fresh, fruity, floral scents. Because I’m absolutely petrified of wasps I tend to stay away from strong perfumes as they seem to flock to me whenever I wear it. So there’s been 3 bottles of body mist that I’ve been picking up during the summer. If you know me well enough you’ll know one of my favourite scents in the world is coconut. So the body mist of choice has 100% been the Victoria’s Secret Coconut Passion Fragrance Mist*. It has hints of vanilla in as well which is another scent of mine. Couple spritz of this and I’m ready to dive right into a cocktail on the beach.
The other top choice has been the Zoella Body Mists, especially the Jelly & Gelato and Botanic’Eau body mists. These 2 are the perfect summer scents. The Jelly & Gelato one was released last year and is based around elderflower. While the Botanic’Eau is a fresher scent with freesia and iris flowers. I feel Zoe seems to smash it every year with her fragrance range and I hope next year is exactly the same.
Makeup Summer Essentials
When it comes to my base I’ve only been using a primer and concealer, just to give me a little bit of coverage. The primer of choice has been the Laura Geller Spackle Tinted Makeup Primer in Bronze. It does not apply to the skin as dark as it looks in the tube, trust me. I was petrified when I first seen it and it ended up in my donation pile. But when I started fake tanning I whipped this out to give it a try and I was pleasantly surprised. It gives my face just little bit of glow whilst bronzing it up a bit. To conceal my under eyes and spots I’ve been using my trusty Tarte Shape Tape in Fair. I absolute rave about this concealer and you can read all about it here.
For bronzer it has to be the Revolution Ultra Bronze, Shimmer & Highlight. I’ve been basically swirling a brush over the whole pan and applying it on my forehead and cheeks. This just works perfectly with my pale skin tone and doesn’t make me look muddy. With my cheeks it’s been the Too Faced Love Flush Blush in Funfetti. This just gives me that colour on my cheeks without making me look too wiped out. Now for my favourite part … HIGHLIGHTER! I’ve been totally obsessing over the Sleek Solstice Highlighter Palette, especially the pinky shade in the bottom right hand corner. It is the perfect blinding highlight and gives your skin that pop of glow on the cheekbones. When the light hits it, it’s just absolutely stunning!
For my eyes I’ve barely been using any eyeshadow however when I fancy a bit of colour to them I’ve just been using a golden shimmer shade over the lid. As for my eyelashes, the mascaras of choice has been the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara or the Wonderland Makeup Lash Lengthening Mascara with Fibres. If I fancy big lashes it’s the BTS but if I fancy a natural looking mascara it’s the Wonderland one.
And thats all my summer essentials!
It’s a long list I know so if you’ve stuck around this long, I applaud you.
